Ronan,
Thks, I'm behind on various things right now, but if this is the Buzan/Lawson 19th-cent piece, I'm aware of it tho have not read it closely. But I will chk out the link (in due course). [Must stop wasting time reading mcmanus's (and others') maunderings.]

One more thing, have you read Bayly's "The Birth of the Modern World, 1780-1914: Global Connections and Comparisons", or heard about it ?

I want to read up a bit on the 'long 19th century' or what have you, and am compiling a list of books that are worth reading.

I have not read Bayly (but have heard of it).

In connection w 19th c., you might be interested in Jennifer Pitts' review of the 4th vol of Wallerstein's Modern World-System, in New Left Review, Nov./Dec. 2012. I have it in hard copy; don't know whether it can be gotten online w/o payment.

thks - It doesnt seem to be available but is as good a time as any to get a sub to NLR (i used to read it when in london but not near a shop that stocks it anymore)

I don't have a sub, but I get the table of contents via e-mail and occasionally I'll buy an article (or an issue) if it's something esp. interesting. (But a sub might make more sense, I suppose.)

p.s. In the case of the Nov/Dec 2012 issue, I bought that in a bookstore. Depending on where one is, as you say, it's not always easy to find it being stocked. The other day I bought a back issue online -- if you do that, they mail you the hard copy and give you immediate access to the online files.
