Thank you Ronan.

I'll read it, and report back on my reaction.

Oh by the way I looked at 'The Outsiders' clip you posted at CT. Good acting, a tad overdone perhaps. Not sure where it's from. A model for the left, eh? *Really* not sure about that... but I don't have the context...

It's from the film The Field (based on the John B Keane play) The film's completely over the top, but the plays alright (and Harris won on oscar for it, I think - playing the part I linked to)
I was only joking really. That's the impression I was getting from a few of the more consistently overwrought posters at CT (that (1) we should return to a time when politics was pure and responsive to all - which never existed imo (2)'The left' should try and ally with the anti corporation right wing ' , which I think wouldnt be a great idea personally. That would b where both plans would get you, imo )

thks. The CT discussion of this whole subject I find not that illuminating. (However, don't want to get into all that rt now.)

I've actually put off reading the linked Bacevich column for various reasons, but I will get to it. Since it's responding to the Kagan
New Repub. piece, I will prob. read the two in tandem. (I've glanced through the Kagan piece, but that's all. Was not impressed.)

Ok, just looked v. quickly at Bacevich after saying I was putting it off. A minor pt, but his figure for the # killed in the Pak-Bangladesh 71 crisis wd seem on the high side (reliable estimates are actually not easy to make, wh/ is one reason Raghavan in his bk declines to get into the estimation business). Doesn't affect the argument but it jumped out at me.
